Girl Scouts Dakota Horizons congratulates Rose VanNelson of Moorhead, MN for earning the Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest award to be achieved in Girl Scouts.
Rose earned her Gold Award with her Soulful Spices Project. Many different types of food are donated to food pantries each month, but Rose noticed spices were rarely among the mix. After discussing the issue with her church and local food pantry, she created a monthly community event that acts as a food education opportunity as well as an ongoing monthly spice drive. All the items donated have been given to the local food pantry and distributed to families in need.
Her accomplishments reflect leadership, citizenship, and foundational skills built through Girl Scouts. “Girl Scouts has offered me opportunities to learn and grow. I have gained confidence during cookie sales and leadership skills through mentoring younger girls. I really appreciate the friendships I’ve made with other girls and adult volunteers,” Rose said.
Rose is graduating from Moorhead High School this month with plans to attend a four-year college and earn a degree in Spanish and science. She will receive her award at the council’s Honoring Excellence recognition event to be held on June 10, 2023.
