Local Girl Scouts Make Their Mark at the 58th National Council Session
Four Girl Scouts Dakota Horizons delegates and two adult members recently traveled to Washington, D.C., to represent the council at the 58th National Council Session, the organization's largest democratic gathering. Held every three years, the National Council Session brings together delegates from across the country to discuss and vote on issues that will shape the future of Girl Scouts.
Among the delegation was Madi of Brandon, South Dakota, who was selected for a prestigious Youth Leadership role. She was one of only 12 Girl Scouts nationwide chosen to help lead the event, welcoming thousands of attendees, guiding delegates throughout the session, and helping facilitate discussions on the future of the Movement.
Throughout the session, all Dakota Horizons delegates actively participated in discussions from the convention floor, sharing their perspectives on key topics and casting votes on proposals that will help guide the future of Girl Scouts. By using their voices alongside delegates from across the country, they played an important role in shaping the Movement for generations of Girl Scouts to come.
After the National Council Session concluded, the delegates stayed in Washington, D.C., to attend Girl Scouts Unite, a national celebration designed especially for Girl Scouts. During the event, the girls enjoyed an exclusive screening of the new documentary Cookie Queens, a special performance by the cast of Broadway's SIX: The Musical, and surprise appearances by Elphaba and Glinda from Wicked.
While in the nation's capital, the delegates also explored Washington, D.C.'s rich history by visiting museums, monuments, and other iconic landmarks, creating memories that will last a lifetime..
The event also included the exciting announcement that the 2029 National Council Session will be held in Indianapolis, Indiana, giving delegates a first look at the next gathering and inspiring the next generation of Girl Scout leaders to continue using their voices to shape the future of the Movement.
