All campers’ attitudes and behavior are critical to the success of the camp experience. The Girl Scout Promise and Law are the foundation of camp behavior expectations. At Girl Scouts Dakota Horizons, we are committed to creating an inclusive environment where all girls can participate in a movement that encourages them to overcome barriers and become leaders in their community and world.
All our staff, campers, volunteers, members, and parents/guardians are expected to think, speak, and act in ways that ensure all people feel they belong and can meaningfully participate in all aspects of Girl Scouting, including at camp. Therefore, for the good of the camp program, as well as for the emotional and physical safety of all campers and staff, everyone is expected to:
- The most important things to pack are a positive attitude and a willingness to try new things.
- Our number one rule is to respect the adults and teen camp counselors who are running the camp.
- Do not argue or talk disrespectfully to them.
- Listen and follow the leaders’ instructions.
- Do not go anywhere alone. Do not leave a group or activity without asking permission. Always have at least one buddy with you.
- Closed toe shoes and socks must be worn at all times, except inside your bunk.
- Camp must be kept neat and tidy at all times. This helps keep the critters away. You are responsible for cleaning up after yourself and throwing away your trash.
- Part of being at camp includes kapers, chores that are done at camp once or twice a day. Girls must do their jobs in a kind and timely manner and do their share.
- Camp can get very hot and humid. Girls are required to take a shower once a day and carry deodorant with them throughout the day in their day pack.
- Every girl must do her best to get along with each and every girl; arguing and leaving someone out will not be tolerated.
- Help others at all times and be a good friend to all girls.
- Do not share scary or inappropriate stories.
- Drink a LOT of water during the day. It is important to stay hydrated. This helps you feel good in the hot and humid weather.
- We know that being away from home can be stressful – especially if this is your first time being at a camp like this. IF you are feeling anxious or upset, please speak to an adult or camp counselor about it so we can help you through it. We are here to make sure that you enjoy your camp experience and will do everything we can to help make that happen.
- Calls home are not permitted.
- Electronic devices of any kind are not permitted.
- Absolutely no swearing.
- Do not have negative food comments, or “yuck others yum.” We offer peanut butter and jelly sandwiches as an alternative at each meal.
