Business ethics. Money management. Goal setting. These are just a few of the skills that Girl Scouts learn during the Cookie Program. One Dakota Horizons’ Girl Scout added a new skill to the list – learning a new language!
Cassidy, from Huron, SD, is currently a Girl Scout Junior. It’s her third year of running her cookie business and this year, she opened up a whole new customer base by learning Spanish! She decided to take on an ambitious task after noticing many members of her community didn’t speak English.
“¿Te gustaría comprar galletas de Girl Scouts? When I say it to them, they start smiling!” Cassidy said. It's more than just one phrase, Cassidy's Spanish vocabulary runs deep. Ask her about any of the cookie flavors – she can tell you the answer – in Spanish!
She gets plenty of opportunities to flex her new language skills during the Cookie Program, by manning cookie booths. Cassidy said that is her favorite part of the program and getting to interact with the community at booths. Her mom, and troop leader, adding they host a booth nearly every weekend during the season.
Over the last few Cookie Programs, Cassidy realized that it doesn't matter what language someone speaks, everyone deserves to be involved in the conversation.
“Learning Spanish gave those [community members] the opportunity to be involved and gives them the feeling of being included,” Cassidy said.
Her cookie goal this year is to sell 3,000 packages and she is well on her way to crushing that goal!
Girl Scout Cookies will be available until March 25th.
