SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Dakota News Now) - Madi M is in her eleventh year of being a Girl Scout and despite her packed schedule as a sophomore in high school, Girl Scouts still remains one of her top priorities.
“Decision making and people skills and, you know, running a business and talking to people,” said Madi of the skills learned. “Obviously, when you go up to someone’s door and you’re selling cookies, you’re going to want to smile, introduce yourself. And just, it kind of teaches girls life skills that they can use forever.”
Through Girl Scouts, she has received the opportunity to travel all over the country and has dozens of badges from service projects and other activities. Her favorite part of the entire cookie season is forming relationships with customers and getting to know the community.
“I make it personalized so that people do want to have me as their cookie dealer, you could say. I’ll write thank you notes in their, um, orders. I’ll go to businesses. I do pop-up shops at a local restaurant.”
This year she hopes to sell 1500 boxes and despite previous seasons of snow and bad weather, she’s usually able to meet her goal.
“I’m trying to strive for a trip to Australia and New Zealand this summer. Also for the younger Girl Scouts, there are prizes that you can strive for but there’s also something called Dakota Doe, which is like Girl Scout money. So, if you’re an older Girl Scout, you can use that as well to pay for camps and trips.”
